Bardfield Horticultural Society
The Horticultural Society has been active in Great Bardfield for more than 100 years. It was formed in 1953, after the 2nd. World War, by Herbert Danes, Albert Cracknell, Fritz Thake and John Aldridge R.A. who became the first president. Each year over the August Bank Holiday, a show was held on the playing field behind the school, incorporating a fete with a marquee, stalls and side shows, and refreshments being served in the school. In 1971 the society broke up for a period, but was reformed in 1977, when a trading hut selling garden requisites was established at Kings House in Brook Street, the home of Mr Cyril Mean, Since then shows have been held in the Town Hall, and the chapel in Bridge Street before it became a private residence. In 1986 the Chairman George Hervey Murray introduced the Village Harvest Supper which is organised by the Society, and the annual format of 2 shows, 2 suppers and a monthly meeting has evolved from this.
The Committee President Mrs. A. Hayward Chairman Mr. L. Horsnell Secretary Mrs. L. Joyce Treasurer Mr. P.
