'ESSEX VILLAGE OF THE YEAR 2009'
John Aldridge R.A.
Aldridge was born in 1905 near Woolwich, and went to Uppingham and Oxford. He taught himself to paint in 1928. In 1933 he moved to Bardfield where he lived until 1983. He collaborated with Bawden on wall-papers, but did little commercial work. He was always chiefly interested in oil painting, and his local scenes and landscapes are much sought after. His pencil sketches of Bardfield scenes are to be found in many of our village houses. Aldridge took great pleasure in developing the Place House garden, and this interest shows in many of his paintings.
He is shown in No.10 of the Bawden village paintings leaning on the bar of the Bell.
