Great Bardfield Parish Council
'ESSEX VILLAGE OF THE YEAR 2009'
|
|
The Society exists to foster interest in History and Archaeology generally, and with special reference to North West Essex and Great Bardfield in particular. The current activities of the Society are:
We hold lectures every two months from September to May in the Town Hall, Great Bardfield at 8 pm. For meting times see the current “Bardfield Times”. Recent subjects have been History of the Landscape, Noblewomen of Eastern England, Mills, Elizabeth Garret Anderson and Great Bardfield’s Medieval Houses.
We organise for members at least one visit to a place of Historical or Archaeological interest each year. In 2003 we had a very successful coach trip to Sutton Hoo, and Geoff Potter’s walk, for the second time took us around the village, telling us about the Great Bardfield of his youth.
The Society administers the large collection of local photographs accumulated by the late Les Buckland, on behalf of the Parish Council. At present two members are cataloguing the collection, and a start has been made on putting the photographs onto CD-ROM, so that the originals ultimately may be donated to the Essex record Office for safe keeping.
This is an ancient village, and recently many houses in the centre have been dated to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with one having features from the thirteenth century. Discussion continues on why the village was so wealthy at these times, when it was on the edge of the sheep rearing area of east Anglia.
