CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION 2 May 2008
I am pleased to introduce the 2008 Annual Report on the work Great Bardfield Parish Council and our District and County Council partners. Details of specific projects are included elsewhere in the report but I would particularly like to highlight the good progress made on the Pavilion Project since last year, our acquisition of the Lordship of the Manor on behalf of the village, the introduction of a mobile speed indicator, our support for the re-launch of the youth club, and our initiation of a possible scheme to provide affordable houses for local people. We have been extremely successful in obtaining grant funding for seven of our projects this year, itself an indication of the quality of the council’s work. We are proud that we continue to be identified as a Quality Council by the National Association of Local Councils, a standard achieved and maintained through the effective teamwork, which is a feature of this council, and the excellent support provided by Kate Fox our Clerk. This year we have won two commendations from the Essex Association of Local Councils, one for last year’s Annual Report and one for the Village Design Statement. During the year we were sorry to lose our vice chair, Mike Hutchinson, who has moved to Saffron Walden, but we are pleased to welcome Alicia Holmes who has been co-opted to the council following the advertisement of the vacancy. Once again we have invited some of the many village organisations to contribute a report on their activities. None of these groups could run without the hard work and commitment of volunteers and the reports show what a vibrant, active community Great Bardfield is. The photographs of people, places and events on the centre pages tell their own story and include the newly re-formed Youth Club, the popular and successful ‘Mud Dogs’ football team, an introduction to ‘SID’, and a record of our visit to the House of Lords where Kate Fox and I were proud to represent Great Bardfield at a Concordat for Quality Councils held by Lord Hanningfield, Chairman of Essex County Council. I take this opportunity to thank Kate Fox for the high quality of her work for the council. Our thanks also to village handyman, Ian Ruffle, Louise Egger who helps to run the Community Information Point and Ian Fox for his support on all things technical, including the production of this report. Janet Dyson, Chair of Great Bardfield Parish Council |
